Chapter Twenty-Seven

I held my breath as I watched the officers break the door in. They charged inside, a cacophony of shouting that would no doubt scare my daughter. Despite wanting them to charge in, watching them do so, I begged for them to go carefully, calmly. Freya was innocent in this. And this would scar her if they were not careful. I ran towards the house, desperate to get inside, to find my daughter and hold her and soothe her as they arrested Lucas. I didn’t want her to witness any of the aggression or violence that might erupt. But before I could get into the house, I was held back by a police officer, who firmly gripped my arm.

‘Woah, woah, you can’t go in there.’

‘Let me go. Please, I just want my daughter.’

‘I understand, but I can’t let you in,’ he said, tightening his grip.

‘Get the fuck off me!’ I snapped, but the officer held firm. Adam gently placed his hand on my arm, and I snapped a look at him.

‘Hey, it’s going to be OK. They’ll find her.’

Inside the house, I could hear people calling out the word ‘clear’. Seven times in all. And then nothing. There was no sound of struggle, no arrest, I couldn’t hear my daughter crying. I looked at Adam, and he almost said something, but, before he could, Myers stepped out of the house. He didn’t look at me, not at first. He looked at waiting forensic officers, who nodded and began to approach the house with their kit. As they entered the farmhouse, he finally turned my way.

‘Where is she?’ I begged.

‘They’re not here.’

‘But you said—’

‘I know, but he has been here. Forensics will find something.’

‘You said they were here! I don’t understand. You said Lucas was here, and my baby was here too.’

‘Emily, I need you to calm down, OK? They were, but he must have run off with her before we arrived.’

‘How?’

‘I don’t know, but I’ll find out, OK?’

‘Oh, God. Please. I just want my daughter.’

‘Sit tight. Look after her,’ he said to Adam before going back into the house. Adam pulled me away from the front door and I began to cry, feeling too heavy to move. The adrenaline I felt was entirely gone, replaced with a deep pain in my gut that had always been there, but now it was unbearable. Adam took me in his arms and, stroking my hair, told me everything was going to be OK. He pulled out his phone and dialled.

‘Who are you calling?’ I asked. My words sounded thick, exhausted. Not that it mattered. Nothing mattered. Nothing but her.

‘Michelle. It’s gone to voicemail,’ he said, as he stepped away to leave a message. ‘Michelle, where are you? Ring me when you get this.’

As he walked, I found myself moving once more. I felt a kind of sad rage, something I’d forgotten was in me. Something from long ago.

‘Em?’ Adam said, as I stopped crying and stood up straight.

‘I need a minute,’ I said.
